تستوسترون و مشتقات آن می تواند یک درمان موثر در برابر بیماری های میلین مانند ام اس را تشکیل دهند، نتایجی که یک مطالعه انجام شده توسط محققان در آزمایشگاه D'Imagerie و علوم اعصاب شناختی (CNRS / دانشگاه استراسبورگ)، نشان می دهد. میلین غلافی است که محافظت از فیبرهای عصبی را بر عهده دارد و اجازه می دهد تا سرعت پالس های عصبی افزایش یابد. نقص در تولید میلین یا تخریب آن باعث بیماری جدی است که برای آن هیچ درمان موثری وجود ندارد. محققان نشان داده اند که مغز که فیبرهای عصبی آن دمیلینه شده اند ، تستوسترون و یک آنالوگ مصنوعی باعث بازسازی الیگو دندروسیتها، سلولهای مسئول میلین سازی شده و بازسازی میلین در آنها تحریک شده است. این کار در ماه ژانویه 2013 در مجله علوم مغز منتشر شده است.

سپس محققان نشان دادند که این آندروژن ها در تحویل سلولهای بنیادی عصبی به الیگو دندروسیتها و ترویج سنتز میلین الیگو دندروسیتها نقش دارند، سپس آنها با تکرار این آزمایش، اما این بار با استفاده از دو گونه موش تراریخته: یکی با یک گیرنده آندروژن جهش یافته و دیگری با یک گیرنده آندروژن که به طور انتخابی در سیستم عصبی مرکزی غیر فعال شده بود. در این موش های غیر حساس به آندروژن، تستوسترون میلین سازی فیبرهای عصبی را تحریک نکرد.

این نتایج شناسایی گیرنده آندروژن به عنوان یک هدف درمانی امیدوار کننده برای درمان بیماری هایی مانند MS پیگیری کرد. آنها راهی را گشوده اند برای استفاده از آندروژن از جمله آنالوگهای تستوسترون مانند MENT ، که به خوبی در انسان برای ترویج بازسازی میلین قابل تحمل است. این کار علاوه بر این امکان استفاده از تستوسترون خون را به عنوان نشانگرهای زیستی برای ارزیابی پیشرفت بیماری دمیلینه فراهم می سازد.

براساس نتایج آخرین تحقیق دانشمندان فرانسوی ، هورمون تستوسترون می تواند با کمک به بازسازی سلول های سازنده میلین ، عوارض بیماری ام اس (مالتیپل اسکلروز ) را کاهش دهد.
گروهی متشکل از محققان موسسه ملی بهداشت و تحقیقات پزشکی فرانسه و مرکز ملی تحقیقات علمی فرانسه به تازگی با آزمایش بر روی موش ها به این نتیجه رسیده اند که هورمون تستوسترون به بازسازی سلول های سازنده میلین کمک می کند. البته این آزمایش در مورد تستوسترون و مشتقات آن می تواند در درمان بیماری هایی نظیر ام.اس نوید بخش باشد.
به نوشته پایگاه اینترنتی فرانسوی زبان تاپ سانته ، نخستین نشانه های ام.اس حدود سی سالگی بروز می کند و زنان در مقایسه با مردان ، دو تا سه برابر بیشتر به این بیماری مزمن مبتلا می شوند.
ام اس یک بیماری خودایمنی است که در آن سیستم دفاعی بدن به سلول های خود به ویژه میلین حمله می کند. غلاف میلین ، غشای چربی است که رشته های اعصاب را از هم جدا و از آن محافظت می کند ؛ مانند نوار پلاستیکی که اطراف سیم های برق کشیده می شود.
غلاف میلین که لنفوسیت ها به آن حمله کرده اند ، به تدریج تخریب شده و نقش خود را در انتشار تکانه های عصبی در طول نورون ها به درستی انجام نمی دهند و این چیزی است که به آن فرایند دمیلینه شدن گفته می شود.
