Though majority of the patients fall into RRMS phenotype it has been shown that 90 percent of them who are diagnosed with a RRMS develop secondary progressive MS within 25 years of onset and in about half of them develop SPMS during the first 10 years. In SPMS remission periods shorten in duration and eventually mainly gradual deterioration remains. It may take many years before onset to secondary progressive form there is no description on the mechanism(s) underlying such a transition to the progressive phase.
