با توجه به تحقیق جدیدی که در مجله مهندسی پزشکی آنلاین منتشر شده است. فن آوری های پوشیدنی تنها برای علاقمندان ورزش و مد نیست،بلکه می تواند برای نظارت و کمک در کلینیک های توانبخشی نیز استفاده شود.

محققان توانبخشی عصبی از کشور ایتالیا یک سیستم ارزان و قابل پوشیدن را توسعه دادند که شامل سنسورهای کششی ساخته شده از الاستومرها چاپ شده بر روی پارچه می باشد. یک باتری ولتاژ پائین سنسورها را تغذیه می کند و سنسورها اطلاعات را به وسیله بلوتوث به کامپیوتر ارسال می کنند.

در یک مطالعه موردی سنسورهای بی سیم داخلی که شامل شتاب سنج های سه محوره و مغناطیس سنج ها می شد برای برآورد میزان دقت نتایج مورد استفاده قرار گرفتند. درآزمایش یک فرد سالم از سنسورهای پوشیدنی برای جمع آوری یک مجموع کامل از حرکات استفاده شد، که این مجموعه بیش از ۶۰۰ حرکت متفاوت در سرعت ها، دامنه و تعداد تکرار مختلف را شامل می شد. در تمامی موارد سنسور پوشیدنی با دقت قادر به اندازه گیری حرکت بود. این دستگاه اجازه می دهد که بر تمرینات فیزیوتراپی در خانه، وضعیت بدنی (پوسچر) یا انعطاف پذیری در طی وظایف روزانه معمولی از راه دور نظارت شود. دکتر میکلانژ بارتولو که این تحقیق را سرپرستی کرده است، می گوید که: تاکنون ما تنها به حرکات تنه توجه کرده ایم، در حالی که می توانیم از این دستگاه برای نظارت بر انعطاف پذیری و ثبات عضلات مرکزی نیز استفاده شود. این سیستم دارای دقت بالایی نیست اما یک دستگاه ارزان و با کاربرد آسان می باشد و یک پیشرفت حقیقی در دستگاه های قابل حمل و نظارت از راه دور در توانبخشی می باشد.
