خاك رس، يا آرژيل از گذشته‌هاي دور مورد استفاده كشورهاي مختلف، جهت درمان قرار مي‌گرفته است و حتي در حال حاضر نيز بعضي از اطباء كه بدان آشنايي دارند، براي مصارف درماني مختلف آن را بكار مي‌برند. آرژيل داراي مواد معدني و آلي مختلفي است و اثرات درماني آن را نيز بايد به علت وجود همين عناصر مفيد در آن دانست.
مصريان قديم، از آرژيل جهت موميايي كردن اجساد مردگان به عنوان يك ماده ضدعفوني كننده، استفاده می کردند. اثر ضد سمي آن نيز ثابت شده است. آرژيل اثر ضدعفوني كننده مشابه بعضي فرآورده‌هاي گياهي مانند اسانس‌ها دارد و استفاده از آن به خلاف ضدعفوني كننده‌هاي شيميايي كه امروزه متداول است و سلولهاي سطحي ناحيه مجروع را آسيب مي‌رساند، فاقد هرگونه اثر زيانبخش مي‌باشد.

به نظر مي‌رسد كه آرژيل داراي اثر راديواكتيو باشد و مقدار آن به تناسب نوع آرژيل بين 3/0 درصد تا 25/1 واحد Mache باشد. در بعضي كتب علمي نيز چنين انعكاس مي‌يابد كه الكتريسيته زمين، خواص درماني به آرژيل (خاك رس) مي‌بخشد.
آرژيل خاصيت جذب كنندگي قوي دارد و براي بي‌رنگ كردن مفيد است و چربي را هم از بين مي‌برد. از آرژيل در استعمال خارجي معمولاً به صورت ضماد (ماسك) ، كمپرس از گرد آن، مشابه پودر تالك استفاده مي‌شود. خاك رسيكه براي مصارف درماني بكار مي‌برود بايد خالص باشد، يعني از زمين‌هاي بكر، غيرآلوده از اعماق 5/1 متري بدست آيد. سپس اين خاك بر روي پارچه‌اي پاك گسترانده شده و در مقابل نور خورشيد قرار مي‌گيرد. به اين وسيله آرژيل از آلودگي‌ها عاري شده و قابل استفاده مي‌باشد.


آرژيل به علت خواصي كه دارد به مصارف تهيه ماسكهاي زيبايي نيز مي‌رسد. براي اين كار بايد مقداري از خاك رس (آرژيل) را با هم وزن خود آب خيار يا آب گوجه فرنگي و يا آب انگور تازه مخلوط كرده و آنقدر همزده تا خمير نرمي از آن بدست آيد. آنگاه خمير حاصل را به روش ماسك بر روي پوست صورت قرار دهيد. اين ماسك را به تناسب نوع پوست، به مدت 15 تا 30 دقيقه مي‌توان روي پوست گذاشت. بعد از آن را با پنبه‌اي آغشته به شير يا گلاب از روي صورت پاك كرده و صورت را شستشو دهيد. انجام اين عمل اگر يكبار در هفتهصورت گيرد، پوست صورت، حالت شاداب و لطيف پيدا مي‌كند. استفاده از آرژيل به روش فوق، علاوه بر آنكه دانه‌هاي ريز و جوش و حالت برافروختگي پوست صورت را از بين مي‌برد، در شادابي پوست و رفع چين و چروك سطحي پوست نيز موثر واقع مي‌شود.
اگر آرژيل به مقدار مناسب با روغن زيتون مخلوط شود، به طوري كه غلظتي مشابه غلظت كرم پيدا نمايد، مي‌توان از آن براي تمام حالات مذكور استفاده كرد.
