یک گروه تحقیقاتی در بوستون به تازگی تفاوت بین دوره بیماری و جمعیتی در افراد مبتلا به ام اس بزرگسالان (MS پس از سن 50 سالگی) ، را مورد مطالعه قرار داده است. این مطالعه در Multiple Sclerosis Journal منتشر شده است.

در این تحقیق محققان به بررسی پرونده 4273 نفر از مبتلایان به MS پرداختند و متوجه شدند که:
• احتمال شروع ام اس 7.96٪ بعد از سن 50 سالگی، و 1.33٪ پس از سن 60 سالگی است.
• افرادی که بعد از سن 50 سالگی تشخیص داده می شوند، با احتمال بیشتری به MS پیشرونده اولیه مبتلا هستند در واقع احتمال MS پیشرونده اولیه 6.9 درصد در کسانی که زیر 50 سال تشخیص داده شده اند، 25.6 درصد در افراد بین 50 تا 60 و٪ 35.1 در افراد بیش از 60 سال سن بود است.
• مردانی که قبل از سن 50 سالگی تشخیص داده می شود تمایل به پیشرفت بیماری تا نمره 6 EDSS (نیاز به کمک به راه رفتن) سریع تر از زنان در این گروه استا، با این حال مردان و زنان پس از سن 50 سالگی با سرعت پیشرفت یکسانی به EDSS 6 می رسند، و این به این معنی است که پیشرفت بیماری در زنان پس از یائسگی سریعتر است.
