پروتئین دخیل در بیماری های التهابی مغز، از جمله ام اس و بیماری آلزایمر، می تواند منجر به درمان های مناسب و تشخیص بهتر شود.

دانشمندان در سازمان علوم هسته ای و فناوری استرالیا (ANSTO) با استفاده از یک روش به نام رفلکتومتری نوترون پروتئین translocator که مسئول حمل و نقل مولکول در سراسر غشاء میتوکندری است را بررسی کردند.

پروتئین translocator در سلول در سراسر بافت پستانداران یافت می شود و اعتقاد بر این است که در تعدادی از نقش های مهم، از جمله در تنظیم استرس نقش دارد. حضور این پروتئین در مغز، نشانه ای از التهاب است که می تواند ناشی از آسیب یا تعدادی از بیماری ها مانند ام اس و بیماری آلزایمر باشد.


"از آنجا که این پروتئین به نظر می رسد در طی فرآیند التهابی که منجر به بیماری مانند ام اس می شود ظاهر می گردد، اگر ما بهتر بتوانیم درک کنیم که این پروتئین چی هست و چگونه در این فرایند شرکت می کند، ما در نهایت ممکن است قادر به ایجاد داروهایی باشیم که می تواند این فرایند را کنترل کرده و حتی التهاب را کاهش دهد.

استفاده دیگر این پروتئین برای پتانسیل تصویر برداری از آن برای اسکن التهاب مغز است. این می تواند مفید باشد به عنوان یک شاخص برای بیماری هایی مانند آلزایمر و برای اسکن التهاب ناشی از آسیب های مغزی.
