یک مطالعه در دانشگاه کوئین بلفاست آغاز شده است که در نهایت می تواند منجر به درمان های جدید برای ام اس شود.مطالعه جدید، ، به بررسی بخشی از سیستم ایمنی بدن می پردازد که می تواند کمک به ترمیم آسیب های ناشی از حملات ام اس کند.این پروژه که توسط دکتر دنیس فیتز جرالد، انجام می شود که خودش تجربه یک وضعیت مشابه به MSبه نام Transverse Myelitis را در زمانی که 21 سال داشت را دارد و در نتیجه التهاب آن منجر به فلج شدنش در عرض 2 ساعت شده بود.
دکتر فیتزجرالد راه رفتن مجدد را که به دلیل آسیب در نخاع ایجاد شده بود در طول ماه های بعد و سال های بعد بدست آورد . این روند ترمیم در بیماری ام اس طبیعی است اما اغلب به مرور زمان ناکارآمد می شود و چون بیماری مزمن و زندگی طولانی است، این مسئله می تواند منجر به ناتوانی دائمی شود. تقویت این روند ترمیم طبیعی در مغز و نخاع مرز بعدی در درمان MS است، در حال حاضر هیچ دارویی ثابت وجود ندارد که به انجام این کار منجر شود. در مورد اهمیت مطالعه جدید، دکتر فیتزجرالد گفت: "هدف اصلی تحقیقات ما شناسایی استراتژی های تازه برای درمان MS و دیگر اختلالات التهابی و دمیلینه است ."سلولهای عصبی با ارسال سیگنال در طول فیبرهای عصبی که در داخل ماده ای چرب و عایق به نام میلین قرار دارند بر قرار می شود. در MS میلین مورد حمله قرار می گیرد و میلین از بین می رود. این تحقیق به درک میلین سازی ، رسیدن به یک فرآیند برای عایق کردن رشته های عصبی با میلین، و میلین سازی مجدد به عنوان یک فرآیند احیا کننده طبیعی که جایگزین میلین آسیب دیده می شود می پردازد."ما در حال حاضر می دانیم که سیستم ایمنی بدن به عنوان یک مقصر بالقوه در MS نقش دارد، اما در سال های اخیر ما اطلاعات زیادی بدست آورده ایم که سیستم ایمنی بدن نیز به ترمیم در بافتهای CNS ( مغز ، نخاع و سلوهای بینایی ) کمک می کند " به طور خاص، گروهی از سلولهای ایمنی به نام سلولهای T ، اخیرا نشان داده شده است از میلین سازی مجدد حمایت می کنند. زیر مجموعه های مختلف از سلول های T وجود دارد و اطلاعات کمی هنوز شناخته شده است که کدام زیر مجموعه ها در این فرایند مفید هستند. در این مطالعه هدف کشف این زیر مجموعه های سلولهای T است که میلین سازی مجدد را در CNS تحت تاثیر قرار می دهند، و آیا افزایش سن باعث اختلال در این عملکرد سلولهای T می شود."نتایج این مطالعه چگونگی نقش سیستم ایمنی بدن، و سلول های T در میلین سازی مجدد در سیستم عصبی مرکزی را نشان می دهد. با درک جزئیات این فرایند ترمیم CNS همچنین ما بینشی نسبت به سایر اختلالات التهابی و دمیلینه بدست می آوریم.
