کارشناسان تغذیه هشدار دادند محدود کردن رژیم غذایی به مرغ و ماهی برای سلامتی خطرناک است و می‌تواند موجب بروز مشکلات بسیاری از جمله فقر آهن شود.

این کارشناسان می‌گویند رژیم غذایی منحصر به مرغ و ماهی و عاری از گوشت قرمز مانند هله هوله خوری، بدن را با کمبود شدید آهن مواجه می‌کند. به گفته پزشکان فقر آهن برای سلامت زنان بسیار خطرناک است و بازده تحصیلی کودکان را نیز به میزان چشمگیری کاهش می‌دهد.

افزودن مواد غذایی و منابع غنی از آهن به رژیم غذایی شامل استیک، جگر و سبزی بولاغ اوتی می‌تواند این کمبود را در حد قابل قبولی جبران کند.

کریستین جسن از فعالان بهداشت و سلامتی در انگیس در این باره خاطرنشان کرد: افزایش فقر آهن در بین زنان در کشورهای توسعه یافته نظیر انگلیس امروزه به یک نگرانی واقعی تبدیل شده است. عوارض فقر آهن جدی و اثرگذار هستند و می‌توانند زندگی عادی افراد را مختل کنند. فقر آهن از عوامل تشدید کننده خستگی و عدم تمایل به کار و فعالیت است.

طبق مطالعه انجام شده از سوی مرکز دولتی «یوگوو» در انگلیس تحت عنوان «مطالعه رژیم غذایی و تغذیه ملی» یک چهارم از زنان و دختران نوجوان انگلیسی با کمبود دریافت آهن از طریق تغذیه مواجه هستند که به این ترتیب خطر جدی سلامتی آنها را تهدید می‌کند.
