پژوهشگران پرتونگاري دانشکده پزشکي دانشگاه تگزاس در هوستون مستنداتي يافته‌اند که نشان مي‌دهد بيماري «ام.اس.» علاوه بر صدمات ناتوان كننده قابل مشاهده، بر ناحيه‌اي از مغز که کار کنترل‌ شناختي و حسي و عملکردهاي حرکتي را بر عهده دارد نيز تاثير ويرانگر مي‌گذارد.



نتايج اين مطالعه كه در آن تالاموس مغز به عنوان محک انتخاب شده، در قالب مقاله‌اي در مجله علمي «نوروساينس» منتشر شده است.



به گفته دكتر «حسن»، از پژوهشگران دانشگاه تگزاس و نويسنده اصلي اين مقاله، تالاموس يک ناحيه مرکزي است که با بقيه بخش‌هاي مغز مرتبط است و همانند يک «اداره پست» عمل مي‌كند.



تالاموس همچنين ناحيه‌اي است که کمترين ميزان صدمه ناشي از زخم‌هاي بيماري را نشان مي‌دهد، اما مي‌توانيم کاهش حجم آن را مشاهده کنيم، بنا بر اين به نظر مي‌آيد که ديگر صدمه‌هاي مغزي مرتبط با بيماري نيز در حال رخ دادن است.



پژوهشگران مي‌دانند که با سالمندي معمول حجم تالاموس کاهش مي‌يابد و اين روند پس از 70 سالگي شتاب مي‌گيرد. هدف تيم پژوهشگران چند رشته‌اي دانشگاه تگزاس اين بود که ببينند آيا اين کاهش حجم در بيماران «ام.اس.» بزرگتر است يا خير، چه در اين صورت مي‌تواند کاستي‌هاي مرتبط با زوال عقل (دمانس) را که به همراه بيماري مي‌آيد، توضيح دهد
