«متأسفانه اطلاع رسانی درباره ms آنقدر كم است كه بسیاری از بیماران از شنیدن نام آن وحشت می كنند.» این ها را دكتر رحمت می گوید و ادامه می دهد: «بسیاری از بیماران حاضرند كه ایدز یا سرطان داشته باشند اما بیماری ms نداشته باشند. اصلاً فكر می كنند كه ms غولی است كه تا پایان زندگی همراه آنهاست. به آنهایی كه از ms می ترسند و وحشت دارند، می گویم كه اولاً كسی كه ایدز و سرطان دارد، نهایتاً دچار مرگ می شود اما ms سختی زیادی ندارد و در بسیاری از موارد درمان می شود.
بیماری ms یك درمان ۱۰۰ درصد ندارد اما در بسیاری از موارد بیمار تا حد سلامت پیش رفته است. بسیاری از بیماران من به راحتی راه می روند و زندگی كاملاً معمولی ای دارند و اگر خودشان نشانه های بیماری شان را به من نگویند، متوجه نمی شوم كه آنان ms دارند.»
دكتر ادامه می دهد: «بیماری ms در ۲ نوع پیش رونده اولیه و ثانویه بروز می كند. در نوع پیش رونده اولیه، علائم عصبی به مرور بد و بدتر می شود و كسی كه در حمله اول نمی تواند پله ها را بالا برود، در حمله بعد كه مثلاً ۲ سال دیگر رخ می دهد، مسیر سربالایی را هم نمی تواند به خوبی طی كند و در حمله بعد اصلاً راه رفتن برایش مشكل می شود. نوع پیش رونده ثانویه نیز مرحله بدتر از نوع قبلی است و به سرعت بیماری خود را نمایان می كند اما نوع دیگری از ms وجود دارد كه به اصطلاح «هلو» است. این نوع ms خوش خیم است و فرد مبتلا به آن تنها در چند مقطع كه فاصله آن گاه به چند سال می رسد دچار حمله هایی خفیف می شود.
جالب است بدانید كه درصد بسیار بالایی از افراد دچار بیماری ms در ایران به نوع خوش خیم آن مبتلا هستند. در همایش سراسری ms كه در آذرماه ۱۳۸۳ برگزار شد، دكتر اعتمادی فر استاد دانشگاه اصفهان نتایج تحقیق خود را درباره افراد مبتلا به ms در ایران ارائه داد. در این تحقیق آمده است: «طبق تحقیقات به عمل آمده احتمالاً در ایران نوع خوش خیم بیماری ms وجود دارد و نوع پیش رونده آن در درصد بسیار پائینی قرار دارد.»
