تحقیقات نشان می‌دهد نور صفحه تلویزیون و مانیتور در هنگام شب می‌تواند باعث بروز تغییراتی در مغز شود که در نهایت منجر به ناهنجاری‌های روحی و روانی شده و خطر ابتلا به افسردگی را نیز افزایش دهد.
این مطالعات هم‌چنین دلیل آن‌که چرا میزان ابتلا به افسردگی در افرادی که در شیفت شب کار می‌کنند بیش‌تر است را توضیح می‌دهد.
نتایج این تحقیقات چندی پیش در نشست جامعه علوم عصبی که در سن‌دیگو برگزار شده بود مطرح شد.
در طول صد سال گذشته نورهای مصنوعی در بسیاری از کشورهای صنعتی بسیار افزایش پیدا کرده است و بسیاری از انسان‌ها در هنگام شب در یک محیط کاملا تاریک نمی‌خوابند.
برای بررسی اثرات مخرب قرار گرفتن در معرض نور در هنگام شب، دانشمندان تحقیقاتی را روی حیوانات انجام دادند. گروهی از این حیوانات در هنگام شب در اتاق‌های کاملا تاریک قرار می‌گرفتند و گروه دیگر در برابر نورهایی با شدت نور تلویزیون قرار ‌گرفتند. بعد از 8 هفته مطالعات روی این حیوانات نشان داد گروهی که در معرض نور قرار داشتند علائمی از افسردگی را از خود نشان دادند.
برای مثال آن‌ها به یک اندازه از غذا خوردن و نوشیدن آب شیرین لذت نمی‌بردند و میزان فعالیت آن‌ها نیز کاهش پیدا کرده بود.
دانشمندان یکی از عوامل بروز علائم افسردگی را افزایش تولید هورمونی به نام ملاتونین می‌دانند. ملاتونین به بدن اعلام می‌کند که شب فرا رسیده است، اما نور در روند تولید این هورمون در بدن اختلال ایجاد می‌کند. این هورمون دارای برخی خواص ضد افسردگی است و تولید آن می‌تواند برخی عوامل افسردگی را کاهش دهد.
به همین دلیل پزشکان توصیه می‌کنند که انسان‌ها در هنگام خواب از قرار گرفتن در مقابل نورهای مصنوعی اطراف خود مانند نور لپ‌تاپ‌ها و تلویزیون‌‌ها خودداری کنند.
