یافته های حاصل از پایانامه ای در آکادمی Sahlgrenska نشان می دهد: نقص در یکی از آنزیم های سیستم ایمنی، شدت بیماری های خود ایمنی مانند ام اس را تحت تاثیر قرار میدهد وهمین توضیحی است برای این سوال که :

یافته های جدید این تصور را ایجاد می کند که : نقص این آنزیم چگونه تشخیص داده می شود و چگونه می تواند منجر به ساخت داروهای جدید گردد .
مولتیپل اسکلروزیس(ms) و سندرم گیلن باره (GBS) -- این دو بیماری خود ایمنی تحت مطالعه پایان نامه مورد نظر-- می تواند دوره های بسیار متفاوت ، با علائم مختلف نامشخص و تهدید کننده حیات باشد باعللی عمده و ناشناخته....
. دراین پایان نامه، محققان عاملی در سیستم ایمنی دفاعی یافته اند که می تواند این مکانیسم را تشریح کند.
سلول های سفید خون سیستم ایمنی بدن، نقش مهمی در مبارزه با تهاجم میکرو ارگانیسم دارد. آنها حاوی آنزیمی به نام NADPH اکسیدازهستند که اکسیژن را به رادیکال های اکسیژن واکنشی تبدیل می کند
مدت زیادی است شناخته شده است که این رادیکال های اکسیژن از عفونت های تجزیه میکرو ارگانیسم جلوگیری می کند.
تحقیقات جدید با استفاده از مدلهای حیوانی نشان داده اند که تولید رادیکال های اکسیژن ناکافی می تواند به توسعه بیماری خودایمنی ، که در آن سیستم ایمنی بدن بیماربه سلولهای خودی حمله می برد ،منجرشود.
این امر نشان می دهد که رادیکال های اکسیژن برای جلوگیری از وقوع بیماری های خود ایمنی اهمیت دارند.
ناتالیا ،ماسبرگ ، دانشجوی دکترا در موسسه علوم اعصاب و فیزیولوژی در آکادمی Sahlgrenska میگوید:"ما می خواستیم که این در انسان نیز بررسی گردد و NADPH اکسیداز در گلبولهای سفید خون بیماران مبتلا به ام اس ،و سندرم گلین دره نیز مورد بررسی قرار گیرد.
"نتایج نشان می دهد که بیماران مبتلا به اشکال شدید بیماری با کاهش سطح تولید رادیکال اکسیژن در سلول های سفید خونشان مواجه هستند که دلیل نارسایی NADPH اکسیدازمی باشد
. محققین کشف کردند که توانایی بدن به تولید رادیکال های اکسیژن واکنشی در مراحل اولیه در دفاع ایمنی بدن در برابر عفونت ها تأثیر عمده ای در مورد نوع وشدت این بیماری ها دارد.
ماسبرگ می گوید:"ما نشان داده ایم که تولید رادیکال های اکسیژن قوی اما کنترل شده توسط سیستم ایمنی بدن ،برای غلبه بر بیماریهایی مانند ام اس و سندم گیلین باره بسیار مهم است
محققان فکر می کنند ، این روش اندازه گیری تولید رادیکال اکسیژن در سلول های سفید خون بتواند برای تحقیق در مورد بیماری های دیگر خود ایمنی و برای تشخیص شدت این بیماری ها استفاده شود. این کشف همچنین می تواند به یک رویکرد جدید برای درمان ام اس در مراحل اولیه آن با داروهایی که باعث تولید NADPH اکسیداز یا واکسیناسیون افراد در معرض خطر ابتلا به این نوع از بیماری منجر شود.
