مولتیپل اسکلروزیس یک بیماری خود ایمنی است که در آن اجزای سیستم ایمنی بدن به اشتباه به پوشش چرب اطراف اعصاب در مغز و نخاع حمله می کند.

اکثر داروهای مورد استفاده در حال حاضر برای مقابله با علائم MS بکار می رود، بنابراین، با هدف قرار دادن سیستم ایمنی بدن در کم کردن یا جلوگیری از این تخریب تمرکز دارد. اما یک تیم از دانشمندان رویکردی متفاوت به درمان پیدا کرده اند: هدف قرار دادن سلول های بنیادی در سیستم عصبی بیمار.
از سلول های بنیادی می‌توان برای بازسازی سلول ها یا بافت هایی استفاده کرد که بر اثر بیماری یا جراحت صدمه یافته اند. این نوع درمان به درمان سلولی معروف است. این قادر به تبدیل شدن هر نوع سلولی در بدن، مانند عضله، بافت مغز ی و طبق این مطالعه، غلاف میلین است.

دو داروی میکونازول( ضد قارچ)، و کلوبتازول ورزشی، که برای درمان بیماری های پوستی مانند اگزما استفاده می شود کاندیدهای خوبی بودند. تیم اثرات داروهای مختلف را سنجیدند. از تمام داروهای مورد بررسی، دو داروی انتخابی-میکونازول و کلوبتازول بهترین اثر را در تحریک و تبدیل شدن این سلول های بنیادی به سلول های سازنده میلین ایجاد کردند .
اثر این داروها چند منظوره در بازگرداندن میلین در مغز موش مبتلا به بیماری مانند مولتیپل اسکلروزیس قابل توجه بود. رابرت میلر، عصب شناسی دانشگاه کیس وسترن ریزرو، گفت: "این یک بازگشت قابل توجه بیماری در موش بود."
هرچند ارزیابی معکوس شدن آسیب های مغزی و ترمیم میلین در انسان نیازمند زمانی طولانی است با این حال، تیم مشتاق است که بتواند نسخه هایی مدیریت شده از این داروها را در آینده توسعه دهد.
