درالد بالسون اهل سادبری با 86 سال سن در مسابقات ملیِ شنا شرکت می‌کند.
گفتنی است که بیش از 40 سال پیش او مبتلا به بیماری ام.اس تشخیص داده شد.
ماه گذشته بالسون با شنا به مددِ بازوانش دو مدال طلا را در بازی‌های Canada 55 Plus در ایالت استراتکونای آلبرتا از آنِ خود کرد.
یکبار زنی شنای بالسون را به شنای فُک ‌ها تشبیه می‌کند و بالسون در پاسخ، آنها را موجودات خوشایند نمی‌شمارد و زن ادامه می‌دهد: اما باله‌ی دمی آنها مثل پاهای تو حرکت می‌کند!»
به گفته‌ی بالسون در وقت شنا پاهایش حالت آویزان دارند و برای همین باید سریع شروع کند، و گرنه به پایین ‌کشیده می‌شود.
او می‌گوید: « موقع شنا، به شخص متفاوتی بدل می‌شوم».
اولین علایم بیماری در چهل سالگی هنگام بازی هاکی ظاهر شد. طبق گفته‌ی بالسون پایش در یخ فرو ‌رفت و موجب سُر خوردنش و برخورد با دیواره های کنار زمین شده، بی‌حسی کفل ها و باسن را ‌ منجر شد.
بار دیگر روز تولدش، موقع رانندگی پاهایش بی‌حس شدند. او برای رساندن خود و همسرش به خانه، مجبور شد پاهایش را با دست روی گاز و ترمز ماشین هدایت و کنترل کند.
بعد از مراجعه به پزشک بیماری ام.اس برایش تشخیص داد شد و پیش بینی استفاده از ویلچر طی 5 سال دیگر.
بالسون هنوز هم با یاد‌آوری گریه‌اش در 44 سالگی به دلیل کناره‌گرفتن از بازی هاکی در اثر بیماری، احساساتی می‌شود. او با اینکه تا آن زمان به شنا فکر نکرده بود اما ایده‌‌ا‌ی‌ برای ادامه‌ی فعالیتش در این رشته می‌شود.
حالا بیش از چهار دهه گذشته است و او به کمک واکر راه می‌رود.
بالسون می‌گوید: «حال من خوب است. این باورش برای مردم سخت است. آنها مرا با واکر می‌بینند و بعد داخل آب می‌شوم. به محض شروع شنا ، آدم متفاوتی می‌شوم. این توضیح[/color]ش آسان نیست. فقط حسی در درونم می‌گوید برو».
او مدال‌های زیادی را برنده شده است: 5 مدال طلا، 2 نقره و یک برنز در سطح استانی. حال دو مدال طلای دیگر نیز به کلکسیون خود افزوده است.
به گفته‌ی بالسون حتی پس از تشخیص بیماری ام.اس، زندگی او خوب بوده است و شانس و نگرش مثبت او به زندگی منجر به موفقیتش است.
او می‌گوید: «در درونم حس خوبی به زندگی دارم. پس چرا از آن لذت نبرم؟»

من هم آرزو دارم بالاخره در حد قهرمانی شنا کنم و حتما به این آرزو خواهم رسید چون خواستن توانستن است و ام اس نمی تواند مانع رسیدن به این آرزو شود من می توانم قطعاً
