مولتیپل اسکلروزیس (MS) بیماری مزمنی است که منجر به حمله سیستم ایمنی بدن به سیستم عصبی مرکزی می‌شود.. علت این بیماری هنوز ناشناخته است، اما تحقیقات نشان می‌دهد که یکی از دلایل می‌تواند سطوح پایین ویتامین D در بدن باشد. افرادی که در جاهای فاقد نور خورشید زندگی می‌کنند ممکن است بیشتر در معرض ابتلا به این بیماری باشند یا در صورت مبتلا بودن به بیماری، عود بیماری را در پی داشته باشد. تحقیقات نشان می‌دهد که میزان نور خورشیدی هم که یک بیمار MS دریافت می‌کند ممکن است بر میزان علائم ناشی از این بیماری تاثیر گذارد.
در حالی که نور خورشید برای بیماران مبتلا به MS مفید تشخیص داده می‌شود، قرار گرفتن بیش از حد در معرض آن می‌تواند بر پوست مضر بوده و نیز علائم بیماری را افزایش دهد.
خورشید چگونه به بیماران MS کمک می‌کند ؟
مطالعات نشان می‌دهد که ویتامین D نقش مهمی در سیستم ایمنی و عصبی دارد، با این حال چگونگی این کار و اثر آن هنوز در حال مطالعه است. MS نوعی بیماری است که در آن سیستم ایمنی بدن اعصاب را در مغز و نخاع مورد حمله قرار می‌دهد. در سیستم ایمنی بدن، برخی از سلول‌ها گیرنده هایی برای ویتامین D دارند. ویتامین D در بدن با چسبیدن به گیرنده خاص در سلول‌ها عمل می‌کند. گیرنده‌ها در سلول های سفید خونِ درگیر در پاسخ ایمنی در MS یافت می شوند. بنابراین، ویتامین D برای کمک به تنظیم سیستم ایمنی بدن بکار می‌رود. اعتقاد بر این است که ویتامین D به طور بالقوه می‌تواند به جلوگیری از رشد MS و کاهش میزان عود بیماری مبتلایان به این بیماری داشته کمک نماید.

قرار گرفتن در معرض نور خورشید منبع عمده‌ی ویتامین D است، محققان نشان می‌دهند که افرادی که در اطراف نور خورشید رشد می‌کنند کمتر احتمال دارد در بزرگسالی دچار MS شوند. علاوه بر این، افراد با سطوح بالاتری از ویتامین D در خون احتمال کمتری برای رشد این بیماری در آنها وجود دارد. تحقیقات نشان می‌دهد که سطوح بالاتری از ویتامین D نیز پیشرفت بیماری را در کسانی که در حال حاضر با MS زندگی می کنند کاهش می‌دهد.
اثرات جانبی منفی خورشید برای MS چیست؟
در حالی که قرار گرفتن در معرض نور خورشید سطح قابل توجهی از ویتامین D برای بدن را فراهم می‌کند‌، قرار گرفتن بیش از حد در معرض آن می‌تواند به دیگر بیماری ها از جمله سرطان پوست منجر شود. علاوه بر این، علایم MS می‌تواند تحت تاثیر گرمای شدید تشدید یابد. این در بیماران مبتلا به MS که مسائل مربوط به حرارت را تجربه کرده‌اند وضعیتی شایع است.
گفته شده است که در طول تابستان، علائم MS با توجه به آب و هوای گرم و یا رطوبت به طور موقت می‌تواند بدتر شود. علائمی مثل از دست دادن بینایی، ضعف و خستگی به احتمال زیاد با افزایش دما مرتبط است.
