اپيدميولوژي (همه‌گيري شناسي) شاخه‌اي از علوم است كه به مطالعه‌ی توزيع بيماريها ، علل و ريسك فاكتورهاي مربوطه پرداخته و اکتشافات مهم در مورد MS (یا بیماری‌های دیگر) را جهت تبیین علل آن، مورد بررسی قرار می‌دهد.
می دانیم که MS در میان مردم اروپا ، ایالات متحده ، کانادا، نیوزیلند و بخش هایی از استرالیا شایع تر است و در میان مردم آسیا و مناطق استوایی شیوع پایینی دارد. در نواحی معتدل، مناطقِ دورتر از خط استوا و عرض های جغرافیایی بالاتر، بروز و شیوع MS افزایش می‌یابد . نقشه‌ی کد-رنگی ذیل تعداد بالایی از مردم مبتلا به MS در سراسر جهان را نشان می‌دهد. اگر دقت کنید تعداد بیشتری از این افراد در عرض های جغرافیایی شمالی و جنوبی بالاتر ساکن هستند.


در ایالات متحده، تعداد افراد مبتلا به ام.اس حدود 400.000 نفر تخمین زده می‌شود ، با حدود 10000 مورد تشخیص جدید در سال( 200 مورد جدید در هر هفته ).

آیا شیوع ام.اس در زنان بالاتر از مردان است ؟

شیوع بیماری ام.اس در زنان بالاتر از مردان و ام.اس عود-فروکش یابنده در حدود 2 تا 3 برابر بیشتر رایج است. برای بیما‌ری‌های خود ایمنی دیگر مثل آرتریت روماتوئید نیز این مورد (شیوع بیشتر در زنان) شامل است.

ام.اس در کدام گروه های سنی شایع‌تر است ؟

ام.اس در هر گروه سنی دیده می‌شود. اما بیشتر بین سنین 20 الی 50 تشخیص داده می شود. متوسط سن بیمار هنگام بروز اولین علائم بین 30 الی 35 است. محققان دریافته‌اند سن بروز بیماری در گروه های سنی مختلف تاثیرات متفاوتی دارد. به عنوان مثال، کسانی که در 50 سالگی یا بالا تر برایشان تشخیص بیماری داده می‌شود معمولا با یک دوره‌ی پیشرفته‌تر بیماری مواجه هستند.


آیا ام.اس در گروه های نژادی خاص شایع تر است ؟

ام.اس در میان سفیدپوستان و در میان مردمی از تبار شمال و مرکزی اروپا شایع تر است. در مقابل، بیماری در میان اسپانیایی تبارها ، آسیایی‌ها ، و در افرادی با نژاد آفریقایی، کمتر شایع است .ام.اس به ندرت در میان برخی گروههای نژادی نظیر اینویت‌ها (اینویت ها یا اسکیموها در شمال کانادا و آلاسکا زیست می‌کنند و واژه ی اینویت را به واژه‌ی اسکیمو ترجیح می‌دهند)، اَب اُریجینی‌ها(یعنی ساکنان بومی استرالیا) و ما اريس‌ها(مردمان بومي نيوزیلند)رخ می‌دهد.


آیا ام.اس در حال رواج است ؟

در مقایسه با سالهای قبل، تشخیص بیماری ام.اس افزایش داشته است . با این حال، محققان آن را دلیل بر افزایش شیوع ام.اس نمی‌پندارد. آنان احتمال را بر افزایش آگاهی نسبت به ام.اس و وجود ابزارهای تشخیصی بهتر، مانند تصویربرداری با رزونانس مغناطیسی (ام.آر.آی) ، برای تشخیص این بیماری می دهند.علاوه بر این، بعلت در دسترس بودن گزینه‌های درمانی بهتر ممکن است پزشکان با راحتی بیشتر به تشخیص قطعی ام.اس پردازند.

این احتمال هست که افزایش ام.اس با عوامل محیطی ، مانند ویروس ها یا باکتری ، مواد سمی ، و یا تغییر در شیوه زندگی ، و برخی عامل های ناشناخته مرتبط باشد.

سازمان‌هایی مانند مرکز کنترل و پیشگیری بیماریِ ایالات متحده (CDC )، انجمن ملی MS و شبکه‌ی اکشن پارکینسون در حال بررسی امکان ایجاد رجیستری ملی مشترک برای بیماریهای عصبی مزمن هستند. این تلاش، سوالات تحقیقی مهم در مورد MS ، از جمله: "آیا بیماری در حال افزایش است؟" را روشن می‌دارد

ام اس در زنان ۴ برابر مردان/ام اس ترس ندارد
دبیر علمی سیزدهمین کنگره ام اس ایران، از شیوع ۴ برابری ام اس در زنان نسبت به مردان خبر داد و گفت: بیشترین آمار ام اس مربوط به تهران و اصفهان است.
دکتر عبدالرضا ناصر مقدسی صبح شنبه در نشست خبری سیزدهمین کنگره ام اس ایران که قرار است از ۱۹ تا ۲۱ آبان ۹۵ در هتل المپیک تهران برگزار شود، افزود: هدف اصلی کنگره، جنبه های آموزشی بیماری ام اس است.
وی با اعلام اینکه کنگره برای متخصصین مغز و اعصاب، پرستاران و پزشکان عمومی ۱۴.۵ امتیاز بازآموزی دارد، گفت: سعی کرده ایم در این کنگره، گروه های هدف نسبت به تمام مباحث مهم پیرامون ام اس، اطلاعات لازم را کسب کنند.
مقدسی در ادامه به وضعیت بیماری ام اس در کشور اشاره کرد و افزود: بین ۷۰ تا ۸۰ هزار مبتلا به ام اس در کشور شناسایی شده اند و تعدادی هم ناشناخته مانده اند.
وی با اعلام اینکه شیوع ام اس در سال های اخیر افزایش داشته است، ادامه داد: علت دقیق افزایش موارد ابتلا مشخص نیست اما می توان به کمبود ویتامین D، افزایش مصرف دخانیات به خصوص در بین زنان و عوامل ژنتیکی، اشاره داشت.
دبیر علمی کنگره ام اس ایران با اعلام اینکه افزایش موارد ابتلا در کشورمان همسو با جهان است، گفت: بیماری ام اس مخصوص دنیای مدرن است.
وی با اشاره به شیوع ۳ تا ۴ برابری ام اس در زنان نسبت به مردان، افزود: بیشترین آمار ابتلا مربوط به تهران و اصفهان است.
مقدسی با انتقاد از فقر فرهنگی که پیرامون بیماری ام اس در کشور وجود دارد، گفت: آنچه بیش از بیماری ام اس مهم به نظر می رسد، باورهای غلط نسبت به این بیماری است.
وی با اعلام اینکه «فوبیای » ام اس ترسناک تر از خود ام اس است، افزود: متاسفانه جامعه بیشتر از آنکه از ام اس رنج ببرد، از فقر فرهنگی این بیماری رنج می برد. در حالی که همه پزشکان می دانند این بیماری قابل کنترل است.
مقدسی تاکید کرد: افرادی هستند که به دلیل ترس از ام اس به مطب پزشکان متخصص مراجعه می کنند که بعد از معاینه مشخص می شود علائم این بیماری را ندارند.
